Do you have trouble falling asleep at night? When you’re sleeping, is it good, sound sleep? Do you have a lot of dreams? Do you sleep straight through until the morning?
When I DO go to bed, I don’t usually have a problem falling asleep. My problem is going to bed at a reasonable time. I, probably like so many of you, find myself involved on my computer far longer than I should be at night….into the wee hours before I call it a day. No matter how many times I tell myself I’m going to bed earlier, it just doesn’t seem to happen; and I have no one to blame but myself. Thank God I do seem to fall asleep without much problem….or Lord knows what shape I’d be in. As it is, I don’t get the required 8 hours they say you should get…that’s very rare. Considering how late I ‘hit the hay,’ I somehow manage to rise pretty early…7 or 7:30; sometimes a little later. I do have the occasional night when I just can’t fall asleep right away; usually related to too much on my mind and my brain just won’t shut off; but that’s also kind of rare.
I can’t remember the last time I actually slept through the whole night without making at least one trip to the bathroom….if not more. One trip seems to be the going rate for me these days. Of course by the time I go to bed, part of the night is already over for a lot people…so I don’t know how fair an assessment that is.
I’m a dreamer….always have been; except lately I don’t seem to be in a dream state as much. I don’t know if that’s because I’m pretty tired by the time my head hits the pillow….and forget about dreaming, my body is just in ‘survival’ mode. I hope my dream state comes back….I love a good, juicy dream.

-The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses.
- It's impossible to tell if someone is really awake without close medical supervision. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it.
- Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you're sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you're still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.
- A new baby typically results in 400-750 hours lost sleep for parents in the first year
- One of the best predictors of insomnia later in life is the development of bad habits from having sleep disturbed by young children.
- The continuous brain recordings that led to the discovery of REM (rapid eye-movement) sleep were not done until 1953, partly because the scientists involved were concerned about wasting paper.

The system was first used on US pilots during the bombing of Kosovo.
