“We Gather Together To Ask The Lord’s Bless……” ZIPPPPPPPPPPPPPP…..”Deck The Halls With Boughs Of…..” I’m just like all the stores I grouch about. Before one holiday is even over, they are stocking their shelves for the next one. It drives me friggin' nuts. And yet….what do I have to say for myself?
Guilty, guilty, guilty. I’m so guilty. Before my Thanksgiving turkey was even out of the oven this year, my Christmas tree was up and decorated. Every table in my living room is adorned with snowmen, santas, wreaths, candles and angels of every shape and size, not to mention my dining room hutch and assorted other places of choice.
My fireplace has its usual display of candles and stockings hung with care….still six in tow. Two more will join the mix when Bella’s and Bastian’s will be added when they come in town on the 20th. I’m posting some pictures that I think even Hallmark would be proud of.
It all started the day before Thanksgiving. I had just gotten home from my physical therapy session for a muscle in my lower back that I’ve been getting some treatment on. I left that session feeling about as good as I’ve felt in a long time.
My kids, Jen and Joe, came over and Joe was gung-ho about putting the Xmas tree up early. (That was really his main job, so who am I to squelch his enthusiasm, right?) So Jen and I looked at each other, I felt pretty good, and we decided to start taking ALL of my “STUFF” out. Believe me….this is NO small task. I kind of cringed secretly to myself because I know once I start…..there’s no turning back.
While Joe got the tree put together and he and Jen got the lights figured out, I decided where I wanted to place everything. This task changes for me every year. Some things are obvious, and some things aren’t. My son can’t understand why this is so hard. Of course, he never understood why I have so much stuff to begin with and always asks the same question every year, “Mom, do we HAVE to put ALL of these ornaments on the tree?” I just look at him and he knows the answer. Then he proceeds to play games with my ornaments and Jenna has to intercede.
Truth be told, the main reason I’m not really bent too far out of shape that we decorated for Christmas on Thanksgiving is that I truly appreciate and value Jen and Joe’s help with all of it. Christmas was always a very big deal to me….and still is. When we use to put outside lights up, my husband, Joel, helped with those, and putting the Xmas tree together; then he pretty much stayed clear of everything else. As soon as Joe was old enough to do those things, he passed them on to him. Before we knew it, all Joel wound up doing was making an appearance every tree-trimming with his glass of wine singing Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
By the end of Wednesday night the majority of my decorations were up, and I was back to being sore and achy; just like I had never gone to PT.
On Thanksgiving morning I woke up at 6:00 for some ungodly reason. Maybe knowing I had to balance making the dinner and finish decorating the house….I don’t know; but I got up anyway. I went where I always go that early in the morning….straight to my computer to check some things out. Yeah, I’ve caught some of you there too….I’m not the only one. I actually did do a little more decorating….but I took my time. Got some things ready for our dinner, and talked to my daughter in New Jersey.
Joe and Jen came later in the morning and finished the tree while I was cooking. Jen helped with the cooking and Joe watched his beloved football while he put ornaments on the tree….and various other places we had to rescue them from. (He’s an evil child…but just so loveable.)
We made it through dinner, which was really yummy; but we were all pretty pooped out. Joe was sinking fast. He hadn’t slept well the night before and was going to pass on Jenna’s dessert until later. He headed upstairs to go relax on my bed and watch the rest of the game. (In actuality…..konk-out.) Several hands of cards, a phone call with my daughter in California, and a couple of loads of dishes later….Jen and I were in a similar state. Joe woke up. We all had some of Jen’s delicious cake….and played some cards. The kids left to go home and crash. I finished cleaning a couple more things and managed to crawl upstairs to the very same place I started out the day…..my computer. I checked out a few blogs and some e-mail. I did a little work. I got freaked when I took a look at myself in the mirror when I went to wash my face. It was a long day. But the house looked GREAT!!
Here’s the pics I promised….there's a lot. I even added a couple of my refrigerator. (Remember the post I wrote about refrigerator magnets a couple of weeks ago?) Here’s my refrigerator in all its glory…..decorated for Xmas, but actually minus a bunch of magnets I took off to make room for the holiday ones. (Click on pictures to enlarge.)
So, yes I’m guilty of jumping the holiday, just like those horrible stores…..but I’m also relieved to have it all done….and thankful to my kids for the help. I don’t envy my kids the task of figuring out what to do with ALL of my things when I die. I swear….they’re going to KILL me. (Hey, I think I just made a funny...or maybe I just need more sleep.) ~Joy -xo
