Hello Fall…. in all your clear and crispy glory. I thought I saw you around the neighborhood. I love when you come to visit. You know just the right thing to do in your ‘perfect weather-kind-of-way.’ Did you know you hold a special place in my heart ever since I was a little girl….many, many years ago? We’ve been great buddies….you and I.
Do you remember all the times we played together in my yard? You would blow all those beautiful leaves at me, and I would catch them….one right after another. And sometimes you’d shake so many leaves from the trees that I would make monstrous piles all around the yard to jump and hide in. Sometimes I’d just lay nestled in one of those piles and look up at you….right into your face. You made me smile.
Do you remember going on those long walks with me through the neighborhood and down to the creek to watch the water swirl beneath my dangling feet? Wasn’t it great when a bunch of my friends would join us and we all sat there with dangled feet, pink cheeks and soft breezes blowing through our hair....compliments of you. There we’d stay for hours talking and laughing until you chilled the air as a reminder to head for home. How did you always know? I can’t remember the last time I dangled my feet. Maybe I need to find a new creek.
Hey Fall, I’ve always wondered how you managed to make it rain on every Halloween….well, almost every one. You must have worked hard to get everything in place at just the right time to make that day as special and scary as possible. I can recall some Halloween nights that were so windy and rainy some of us literally blew from house to house landing as sopping blobs at someone’s door....candy bag drenched and half ripped; but still managed a grinning “Trick or Treat.” You really outdid yourself. I’ve noticed that you’re still working at it….all these years later. I still love Halloween and all the ambiance you conjure up. I wonder what you’re planning this year when I open the door to see the scary creatures you’ll be chaperoning. You rarely let me down.
You’ve been present for a lot of great times in my life…and made them all that more special. Football games, homecoming floats, bonfires, hanging out at the drive-in eating burgers with friends, games of tag, picnics and parties....and so much more. You were there for all of them.
I’ve probably told you this before, but you are one AMAZING artist. I’ve never seen such incredible colors.... anywhere. Sometimes when I’m driving and I see a particularly beautiful scene or landscape with your signature on it, I just have to stop and take it all in. I never know how long it may be there; but I never fear…. there’s always another just down the next street, around a corner, or across a field. You’re very prolific.
I hope you don't have to cut your visit short this year. There are so many of us who have been waiting for you to come into town….you with your brilliant fresh face and brisk breezes. Stay as long as you can old friend. And if Winter tries to bully you into shortening your stay, please stand your ground…..your colorful, leafy, autumnal ground….and show him the door. Don’t forget, you’ve got a secret weapon……..INDIAN SUMMER! That will frost his cookies! ~Joy
